What is your band name and what does it mean to you?
VENUS FLY TRAP. Hard to pick a name that has not been used before. I liked the idea of a plant that eats insects rather than the other way round, the connections with the planets, mythology, sci fi, so there are plenty of images and ideas to inspire lyrics and artwork.
Where is your band based?
NORTHAMPTON, exotic East Midlands, UK famous for shoes, BAUHAUS, ALAN MOORE and the film KINKY BOOTS.
How long have you been together?
Im the only survivor from the original line up from 1986, we have had a myriad of line ups in the intervening years.
What style of music do you play?
We have been described as “bladerunner rock n roll with dark acidic shades”. We create dark sonic cinema for the mind, film noir, sci fi soundscapes that absorb post punk, electronica and meld joy division, doors, chemical brothers like melted wax crayon colours.
Give us the story of the bands formation. Tell us about your influences.
I had been in a band called ATTRITION who were based in London at the time. I had done an album and toured Holland with them, my first trip abroad with a band. I decided to move back to my native Northampton, hooked up with my brother JOHN NOVAK(ISAWS,WHERES LISSE)and TONY BOOKER an x art school student. The line up has changed many times over the years,ANDY DENTON joined via a local band CROWMAN,initially as the drummer and ended up playing guitar and has done for many years.
What got me involved in music in the first place was the punk, new wave explosion it changed my perception of being able to be in a band, it was the get up and give it a go attitude and see where it leads approach appealed to me. Minimal experience but it didn’t matter it was the ideas that counted, this diy approach got people involved in music who would not thought of it before.
Tell us about your latest release and where is it available?
We have a download single available ACHILLES HEEL from the album VENUS FLY TRAP-TIME LAPSE CD/DL(GLASS RECORDS MODERN)its a selection of tracks collected from the albums TOTEM,PANDORAS BOX and LUNA TIDE placed together as a possible alternative album in this alternate reality.
And heres the video for ACHILLES HEEL;
How are you weathering the covid 19 pandemic,it must be tough for artists?
Well alongside playing in a band, i promote gigs,dj and run a record shop – SPIRAL ARCHIVE RECORDS, so it all came to a grinding halt, so i switched to online sales and still waitngfor gigs/djing to come back regularly, but the shop is re open again after four months of being shut. Difficult.
If you could share the stage with any other band or artist who would you choose?
Doing duets with MARLENE DIETRICH.
What can you tell us about you live shows?
Expect pounding electronics overlaid with a pincer movement of dark vox and needle point guitar, all filled in with wax crayon colours to mesmerise the audience into submission.
Do you have any upcoming gigs to promote?
Were beginning to sort dates in Northampton, Nottingham with ROSE OF AVALANCHE and Leicester more to follow I guess as things begin to open up….
What do you think sets you apart from other bands?
The fact we have survived this long and produced quite an extensive back catalogue, fame hasn’t changed us…
Explain where you think a new listener should start with your music?
Probably a good place to start is a release that gives a career overview VENUS FLY TRAP/ALEX NOVAK-MERCURIAL CD/DL(GLASS RECORDS MODERN)it is a best of VFT and other bands, projects i have been involved with including ISAWS,RELIGIOUS OVERDOSE,TEMPEST,ATTRITION,NOVA STATE CONSPIRACY,THE DEN and SPORE,a retrospective for people to delve into and explore further, for listeners with a penchant for dark alternative music.
What has been your biggest achievement as a band so far? What else do you hope to achieve?
Touring most of Europe, putting out many releases…once you have achieved one goal you move onto the next like to play in places we have not been to before especially japan and mexico..
Are you active with fans on social media? What are the benefits of those interactions?
Its the only avenue at the moment so vital keeping people informed of any activities..but cant really replace face to face interaction at gigs…
