The Sleep Over (2020)

When two siblings discover their seemingly normal mom is a former thief in witness protection who has been forced to pull one last job, they team up to rescue her over the course of an action-packed night.

Have you seen “The Long Kiss Goodnight”?  Well, here we have a bit of a different take on that formula.  It’s far more comedic, family friendly and fun, and the amnesia element is exchanged for witness protection, but the similarities are there.

I actually had a lot of fun watching this movie, and right now, we could all use a bit of fun.

It’s well put together in all aspects, and visually looks great.  Directed by Trish Sie who has done quite a few music videos, it’s no surprise that it has a visually appealing look.  And written by first timer, Sarah Rothschild, the script is actually pretty good for a debut writer.  There’s nothing overly complicated, but everything flows well.

The cast is great.  Joe Manganiello is fantastic, and I’m not sure why he doesn’t get cast as a modern day action hero.  He has the look for it – he’s huge.  Ken Marino is absolutely hilarious in his role as the bumbling husband/father who is completely out of the loop.  The kids, they’re pretty good at what they’re doing, and a couple of them will have bright futures.

For me though, it’s all about Malin Akerman.  This actress is absolutely stunning, and I could, and do, watch her in everything she does.  Drama, comedy, action – she can do it all.  She’s brilliant.

The Sleepover is a Netflix Original – whatever that means these days – regardless, the quality of their output has certainly been raised lately.  The casting is on point, and visually, it’s exciting.

As far as “lockdown” viewing goes, you could do much worse.
