Jay and Silent Bob return to Hollywood to stop a reboot of the ‘Bluntman and Chronic’ movie from getting made.

Let’s take just a moment to talk about Kevin Smith.  There is absolutely no middle ground with this, you either love him or hate him.

Personally, I love him.  I think he is a genius, and should be held in the same esteem as Quentin Tarantino.  Sure, he made Yoga Hosers, Cop Out and Jersey Girl, but you can’t deny that even those films have great moments.  In my opinion everything else is gold – yes, even Tusk!

I have watched all of his movies many times over, read his books, seen him live, and listen to several of his podcasts regularly.  He’s brilliant.

Anyway, that’s enough sucking his dick.  Let’s talk about his latest release, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot…

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was an over the top comedy, featuring a huge array of characters from all of the previous Kevin Smith films, wherein our titular heroes head to Hollywood to stop the Bluntman and Chronic movie from being made.

This time around, the perpetually stoned duo head back to Hollywood in order to stop the Bluntman and Chronic Reboot from taking place, and find themselves in some strange predicaments along the way, and once again, many “View Askewniverse” alumni drop in along the way.

Jason Lee, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, Shannon Elizabeth and Brian O’Halloran all reprise roles from previous Smith movies, while stars such as Craig Robinson, Jason Biggs, James Van Der Beek, Diedrich Bader and Rosario Dawson take on new, albeit very minor roles within the reboot.

If those names aren’t enough, there are cameos from Chris Hemsworth, Method Man and Redman, Tommy Chong, Justin Long, Melissa Benoist, Joe Mangiellio, Val Kilmer, Chris Jericho, Molly Shannon and Frankie Shaw… WOW!

The whole thing is a very tongue in cheek look at the current reboot culture, which sees the various cast members often breaking the fourth wall to poke fun at the movie itself, it’s director, or we the viewer – and aside from playing Silent Bob, Kevin Smith puts in an appearance as himself, bringing a very meta feeling to the whole thing.

Say what you will about the silliness of the movie, but watch closely, and marvel at the actual acting chops of Jason Mewes as he convincingly depicts the emotion of a man who discovers he’s the father of an eighteen year old daughter.  Becoming a father in real life has done wonderful things for Jay, and that translates to the screen.

The daughter of Kevin Smith, Harley-Quinn Smith also steals the show in her role as Jays daughter.  Groan if you will at the thought of a director casting his own daughter in a featured role, but this girl can act.  There is one scene in particular where the emotion she conveys had my heart breaking for her.  This young woman has a very solid career ahead of her.

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot was a lot of fun for me as a long time fan of these characters.  It’s a star studded affair, full of over the top silliness and a great amount of heart within its core.

Check it out.
