To An End are an alternative metal band from Melbourne, Australia.
With a style of music that will appeal to fans of Killswitch Engage, Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, Trivium and Stone Sour, they truly cover a lot of bases.
Their debut album, REDEFINE, is out now, and ranges from catchy hard rock to melodic metal with a few surprises throughout, and includes guest appearances from Chris Amott (ex-Arch Enemy) and Chris Clancy (Mutiny Within, Wearing Scars).
Shayne recently spoke with the bands guitarist, Matt Turner, about all things To An End, as part of Noise Pollutions on-going “Introducing…” series.
What does the band name mean to you?
The name was one of many for consideration at the time. It was quite difficult to find something that firstly, wasn’t already taken and secondly, sounded good and was decent as a logo. We think ‘To An End’ ticks the boxes!
Where is the band based?
We are based out of Melbourne, Australia and there is a fantastic rock and metal scene here and throughout Aus.
How long have you been together?
About 2 years
What style of music do you play?
Given the large range of personal influences of each band member, we feel like we bring elements of metal and rock with a mix of traditional and more modern elements. ‘Alternative Metal’ might cover it, but we just play and it sounds the way it sounds haha
Give us the story of the bands formation.
Myself (Matt – Guitarist) and Al (vocals) wrote the songs which was really a studio passion project at the time. After recording the full length album, we realised pretty quickly that we need to get a band together and play as much as possible! So the process was a bit backwards to most bands who will jam, gig then record. The album came first for us.
Tell us about your influences.
Our individual music tastes range from Journey, Pantera, Glassjaw, Faith No More, Tool, Slayer, Meshuggah to 80’s rock to death/black metal haha. As a band, we feel we’ve been influenced by heavy music with melody so there are elements of Metallica, Killswitch Engage, Stone Sour, Sevendust and Disturbed. Personally, I’ve always gravitated towards song writers and great riffs so my heros are Metallica, Pantera, Lamb of God, Alice In Chains, Tool. Too many to mention though!
Tell us about your latest release.
Our latest single is titled ‘Left Untold’. We see this song as a powerful and high energy interpretation of the abrupt endings that can happen in life that are out of our control. It could be a relationship, friendship or any other life event where the story is shorter than expected.
Where is your music available?
Everywhere! Check out our music on all streaming platforms, Bandcamp, YouTube and toanend.com.
What are your goals for the bands future?
We released our debut album late last year and the plan then is for a follow up album and of course, more gigs!
If you could share the stage with any other band or artist, who would you chose?
I think any shows with Metallica would be a dream tour. Absolute legends of the genre and it doesn’t get much bigger than them!
What can you tell us about your live shows?
Our goal live is to enjoy ourselves, be in the moment and play as hard as possible. Authenticity translates well to the audience and we love what we do, so it’s always a blast. Our songs are big on energy and hooks so it doesn’t take long before the crowd is moving and singing right along with us. That just fuels us more.
Do you have any upcoming gigs to promote?
We are actually concentrating on a new album at the moment but hope to fill the spare time with more shows to see 2019 out.
What do you think sets you apart from other bands?
We are very proud with how the overall collection of songs work together on Redefine. While we touch on rock, metal plus some quieter moments, I feel that it is a compelling listen with something on there for everyone. Overall, I think it’s important to keep a full length album interesting and to not be confined by invisible genre boundaries that stop a musician from doing whatever feels right at the time. If one song is fast and heavy, that doesn’t mean the next can’t be a mid-paced catchy song, or an acoustic tune. It keeps things interesting!
Explain why you think a new listener should give your music a go.
Given the diversity of songs on the album, there is likely to be something for everyone. I encourage anyone who likes rock and metal so give the album a listen right through and, hopefully, there are a few tracks you can add to your playlists!
What has been your biggest achievement as a band, so far?
I think there are many goals you achieve that are just as important as each other. Getting the album out, playing a great run of shows in support of the album, doing the music videos etc. all adds up and propels the band forward. Also, we did see one of our t-shirts on prime time TV, so that might actually be the biggest achievement haha.
What else do you hope to achieve?
Completion of more great music to top the first release and bigger shows.
