Ameridian rock – What is that you ask?
It is VAYA. It is the white wolf legend.
A spirit that screams and blows with the wind on the stage. VAYA is the drums and her spirit rises through the sacred fire of rock music.
It all sounds very interesting when you read the bands Facebook biography, but you probably won’t fully get a feel for VAYA until you hear their music. As you will read in the interview below, their sound is informed by an eclectic range of artists – and as a result it’s a very interesting listen.
Noise Pollution recently took some time out to get to know VAYA, finding out about their history, influences, and goals for the future…
What does the band name mean to you?
Well VAYA , opus 1 is the spirit of the White Wolf. But the large vision of it is that VAYA simply expresses our inner wild part, represented by animals spirit and the power of nature that was taught by the elders and that most of the people have forgot. Human roots.
Where is the band based?
Actually VAYA is based in Toronto, Canada, where the second opus is in the process.
How long have you been together?
So the actual team has been running on stages together now for 2 years.
What style of music do you play?
Do we really have a style? It is like asking someone who has always had a free life style: what kind of rules he is following. Well it is a really ecclectic mix between strong classical backgrounds with rock, blues, jazz, industrial and more we went through – so basically rock, but what most people say is “VAYA is simply avant-garde and unique”.
Give us the story of the bands formation.
The story begins in the childhood of a little girl. Then the little one became a grounded wild woman. The rest appeared to her under a tree on her leather book. She called the drummer, Raphaël and they started to “jam” on the first energies. The third one, Phil, the principal guitar player, joined the project when the whole album was recorded and that VAYA needed to build the team for the stages.
Tell us about your influences.
Ecclectic and really selective: I am a hard listener. I also mostly like artists who have a strong and authentic charisma like Jim Morrison, Jack White, NIN, David Bowie and Beethoven.
Tell us about your latest release.
VAYA, The first and double album is a gift! It is made in two parts: one is 14 pieces recorded in studio and the other one an all live set recorded in studio as well. And what is making it unique ? It is a special edition of 1000 copies, each numered by hand – so each piece is unique.
Where is your music available?
Because we are not seduced by selling on social network and more you can only get the album in some physical stores or easier, order it on our official website asking for your favourite number. But you can still discover some of our songs on video clips we have done – all are on https://www.vaya-official.com/
What are your goals for the bands future?
Play on a maximum of stages around the world and also finish the second album, which is currently in process.
If you could share the stage with any other band or artist, who would you chose?
Jack White
What can you tell us about your live shows?
There is only a way to explain it – you have to live it. You will probably meet a deeper part of yourself.
Do you have any upcoming gigs to promote?
Not really. We are focused on the production for the second opus, especially the next two short movies we will realize in Japan next year.
What do you think sets you apart from other bands?
Authenticity and mysticism.
Explain why you think a new listener should give your music a go.
To meet yourself through another door? As Jim said “break on through to the other side”.
What has been your biggest achievement as a band, so far?
Not yet done – and will it ever be? I am super ambitious with myself.
What else do you hope to achieve?
Enjoying life as a gift.
Where can fans find you online?
