Dublin’s W.A.L.K.E.R have boldly named their EP “Bringing Rock Back” and from the huge opening of Time to Party, you genuinely believe they could do just that. There’s a Skid Row vibe very present here, with brilliant riffs, some exceptional lead guitar work and a rhythm section groove that makes me want to pump my fists in the air.
The title track is a little more basic as far as lyrical content goes, but it still makes for a pretty enjoyable song. More fantastic work from Kelan Hughes and Glen Walker, who pulls double duty as the bands vocalist as well, keeps the groove present.
Dreaming of You is the obligatory power ballad, or as close to a power ballad as you can get. Vocally, Glen Walkers voice suits the bigger hard rock style. That’s not to say he’s not good here, he’s just better elsewhere.
She’s on Fire brings it up a couple of notches for a southern styled rocker by way of 1989. Its modern but retro sounding all at once.
Closing track, When it Rains is quite possibly the best set of lyrics on Bringing Rock Back, and musically it’s a beast. More great leads, another groovy riff, and a perfect rhythm section makes for maybe the highlight of the EP, although that opening track is a killer.
I’ve spent a lot of time listening to Northern Irish hard rock, and I’m often blown away. W.A.L.K.E.R is my first foray in to any Southern Irish rock, but now I need to explore their scene more, because these kids rock, and have a bright future ahead.
